The Diocesan Museum of Massa

39

Among the various historic buildings that Massa can boast, the old Cadetti Palace houses the Diocesan Museum. Initially intended for the children of the Cybo-Malaspina family, the palace underwent several modifications over time, eventually falling into decay during the Napoleonic period. At the end of a lengthy restoration in the 1990s, preceded by other renovations due to Duchess Maria Beatrice d’Este, the palace then became home to the Diocesan Museum and Historical Archives. Today the space, founded by Bishop Eugenio Binini, preserves several sections dedicated to the Cathedral Treasury that include gold and silver embroidered religious ornaments and draperies; silver liturgical furnishings; and episcopal insignia belonging to early bishops. Great importance is given to works from churches in the diocese. Among the works on display are: the Triptych with the Madonna Enthroned with Child and Saints from the late 15th century by Bernardino del Castelletto from the altar of the Bishop’s Chapel; the 17th-century Stationary Cross attributed to Gian Lorenzo Bernini; the 17th-century marble Pietà by Felice Palma; and finally the Reliquary Statue from 1685 by Giovanni Vambrè.

Through a selection of artworks, including paintings by local artists and ornate liturgical furnishings, visitors can explore the city’s religious roots. The works on display tell not only the history of the churches, but also the stories of those who helped maintain them over the centuries. The goal of the museum, then, is to preserve and pass on the memory of shrines and artists, offering a glimpse into their evolution and their role in the Massa community.

The museological project was carried out in collaboration with the Superintendency responsible for the territory of Massa, and was preceded by the careful analysis of cataloging, and restoration of the works.

The museum also serves as a center for the planning and implementation of initiatives aimed at enhancing the rich artistic heritage of the diocese. Through its activities, it keeps the historical memory alive and to stimulate an ongoing interest in the religious and artistic traditions of the area, contributing to the enhancement and preservation of the cultural heritage of the diocese of Massa. Its visit is designed as an incentive for visitors to further explore the places of worship and continue their journey through the art and religious history of the locality.
