Known to have been an important Italian noble family, its origins go back to the Obertenghi, the ancient marquises of Tuscany. From the 13th-14th centuries, the family ruled numerous fiefdoms in the Lunigiana region and, from the 15th century until 1797, they were the rulers of the marquisate of Massa and Carrara. Their fortresses are scattered throughout the territory and not only represent the historical legacy and power of the Malaspina family, but also the cultural heritage of the Massa and Carrara region. Each fortress has its own history, intertwined with the events of the dynasty and the political and social transformations of the region over the centuries.

In the town of Comano, located in the valley of the Taverone stream, the castle, of which only a few ruins remain today including a tower dating back to the 13th century, played an important role both as an economic center but also because of its strategic location on the border between Romagna and Tuscany. Its location underscores the importance the structure had as a defensive fortress in times of conflict and instability. The first written mention of the castle, on the other hand, dates back to 884: moreover, despite the written mentions, archaeological studies have found remains dating back to Roman times. A document from Fivizzano, on the other hand, dates from 1481, which points out particular damage to castles in the area due to major seismic activity.

Moving instead toward the town of Carrara it is possible to find the ancient Cybo-Malaspina Palace, built on fortifications of Lombard origins, in the reign of Guglielmo Malaspina. For this reason, the palace is composed of two distinct parts: one section includes the Malaspina Castle, dating back to the 13th century, while the second comprises the Renaissance palace, started by Alberico I in the late 16th century, a period when it became the residence of the lords of the city. After their fall, the palace fell into decay and its works were stolen. Around 1769 Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina, duchess of Massa and princess of Carrara decided to take back the palace and start the foundation of the Academy of Fine Arts. The institution, established under her patronage, played a key role in promoting arts and culture in the region. Today, the palace, which now houses the Academy, continues to this day to be an active center of education and creativity, and each year welcomes numerous young students and visitors curious to admire the treasures hidden within.

In the hills of Lunigiana, stands the Malaspina Castle of Fosdinovo, home of the Malaspina family since medieval times. Records of the castle are rooted around the 13th century, a time when the rise of the Malaspina marquises led to the fall of the bishop’s religious power in the surrounding land and consolidated them as lords of the locality. Due to its strategic location on the heights of Lunigiana, it was decided to expand and reinforce the fortress around 1300 through towers and turrets and other additional changes in the structure of the palace. Subsequent modifications over the centuries have helped shape the castle’s current appearance, which remains a testament to the power and history of the Malaspina family in the region and which have given it the title of “indestructible.” The Malaspina Castle in Fosdinovo, with its medieval architecture, gives its visitors a fascinating experience that can immerse anyone in the history and culture of the area. Known for the famous legend that links it to the ghost of Bianca Maria Eloisa, daughter of the marquis who in 1620 was walled up alive in a room of the castle, the fortress is shrouded in a mysterious atmosphere that still makes it enigmatic.

The Malaspina castle in the town of Massa is located on a rocky hill. Its origins are mentioned through writings dating back to the 12th century. There have been several pivotal moments for the castle in Massa: In the 15th century, its control passed to the Marquis Malaspina of Fosdinovo, who transformed it into a Renaissance residence complete with an inner courtyard and frescoes inside the halls and on the facades of the palace. Later, during the 19th century until 1946, the castle served as a prison. Currently, the castle houses the warehouse of the Archaeological Superintendence of Tuscany, and is home to the Institute for the Enhancement of Castles, which contributes to the preservation of the region’s cultural heritage. The institute is dedicated to the management and promotion of historic castles in the locality and actively works to preserve their historical and architectural completeness. Through educational programs, cultural initiatives and restoration activities, the institute protects the structures from the ravages of time, making them accessible to the public and allowing them a tour within their historical and artistic heritage.

When talking about Massa and Carrara, it is impossible not to mention the Malaspina family.
