Its meadows, at 1,300 meters above sea level, offer a unique panorama, having on one side an open view of the Tyrrhenian coast from Livorno to the Gulf of La Spezia and on the other of the highest peaks of the chain. They are a common destination for Sunday outings and allow one to enjoy a day away from the city and with the possibility of pitching a tent, which will then have to be dismantled the next morning since bivouac but not camping is allowed, and spending the night in order to enjoy breathtaking sunsets and sublime sunrises. Heading up to the meadows from the parking lot in the square of Acquasparta, one encounters the Carrara refuge, a great place to refuel with water and sandwiches or even to eat sitting at a table in its restaurant; the refuge also sleeps 36.

Another place to recommend to nature lovers, just a few minutes’ drive from the center of Massa, is along the banks of the Renara stream, which with its cold, clear waters, small white beaches, waterfalls and natural pools offers various settings in which to stop, and regenerate from the summer heat away from the city bustle. In the first stretch one encounters going up from Massa, at the generally more frequented village of Guadine, there are several pools, even deep ones, and one finds oneself surrounded by woods, while going up the stream and reaching Renara the landscape becomes wilder and sunnier, also accomplices of the signs of mining activity, but certainly very evocative and solitary.

For those who want to get a closer look at the varied realities of Apuan flora, a visit to the Pellegrini Botanical Garden, at Pian della Fioba, a pass on Mount Antona in the municipality of Massa, nestled in the Apuan Alps Natural Park, is strongly recommended. The garden is dedicated to Pietro Pellegrini, a physician who devoted much of his life to the study of the flora of these mountains; it covers an area of about three hectares and was established in 1966 for educational and popular purposes since many of the Apuan endemic species are kept inside. The association that manages it organizes educational activities for children and young people, also in collaboration with schools, and guided tours that consist of a route of about an hour and suitable for everyone that develops through specific contexts of different areas of the Apuan Alps. In the lower part, there is an area that allows one to observe many endemic floristic species, such as the Hypericum and the Lily of St. John, a collection of different types of chestnut trees, a small lake that hosts some plants that characterize the rare wetlands found at the altitudes of the Apuan Alps, as well as an area where various types of blueberries are protected. Continuing the visit, one encounters oaks and hornbeams, and on the many exposed rocks one can observe the peculiar rupicolous vegetation.

In Marina di Massa, at Rochi, there is the WWF Educational Park, an area very close to the sea and maintains the typical environmental characteristics of the coastal forest.
It covers about a hectare and a half, admission is free, and on the walk through it there are explanatory signs that help you understand the particularities of the natural cross-section around you. There are also a botanical garden and natural educational areas, as well as an auditorium where nature evenings are organized with projections on local flora and fauna, then one encounters terrariums for tortoises and tanks where one can observe some species of fish and some small ponds where amphibians and aquatic reptiles find a protected habitat.

The flora is that typical of the Mediterranean maquis and the fauna encountered along the route, in addition to peacocks and rabbits in the wild, is often composed of injured animals that experience a rehabilitative path here before being if placed in their natural environment. The center is also active in sea turtle rescue and carries out this activity by rescuing and helping Caretta turtles in need of care. Particularly suitable for children, the park surprises the visitor in an area mainly used for beach tourism by recounting a natural environment that has now almost completely disappeared.

The territory encompassing the cities of Massa and Carrara, squeezed between the majestic Apuan Alps and the sea, is completely…

[1912,162

post-53581","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-art-culture","category-itineraries

The best places for nature lovers between Massa and Carrara - Visit Riviera Apuana

{"@context":"https://schema.org","@graph":[{"@type":"Article","@id":"https://www.visitrivieraapuana.it/en/explore/itineraries/the-best-places-for-nature-lovers-between-massa-and-carrara/#article","isPartOf":{"@id":"https://www.visitrivieraapuana.it/en/explore/itineraries/the-best-places-for-nature-lovers-between-massa-and-carrara/"},"author":{"name":"admin","@id":"https://www.visitrivieraapuana.it/#/schema/person/7ae08406629d42a250bc0dd92ccd3841"},"headline":"The best places for nature lovers between Massa and Carrara","datePublished":"2024-06-20T13:42:44+00:00","dateModified":"2024-06-20T16:25:23+00:00","mainEntityOfPage":{"@id":"https://www.visitrivieraapuana.it/en/explore/itineraries/the-best-places-for-nature-lovers-between-massa-and-carrara/"},"wordCount":987,"publisher":{"@id":"https://www.visitrivieraapuana.it/#organization"},"image":{"@id":"https://www.visitrivieraapuana.it/en/explore/itineraries/the-best-places-for-nature-lovers-between-massa-and-carrara/#primaryimage"},"thumbnailUrl":"https://www.visitrivieraapuana.it/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Campocecina.jpg","articleSection":["Art &
