{"id":51755,"date":"2024-06-18T09:40:12","date_gmt":"2024-06-18T09:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.visitrivieraapuana.it\/non-categorizzato\/palazzo-binelli\/"},"modified":"2024-09-23T08:35:50","modified_gmt":"2024-09-23T08:35:50","slug":"palazzo-binelli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visitrivieraapuana.it\/en\/explore\/places-to-visit\/palazzo-binelli\/","title":{"rendered":"Palazzo Binelli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Palazzo Binelli is one of the historic palaces of nineteenth-century Carrara; its construction, from the foundations of a pre-existing building, is part of the great urban reorganization linked to a period of decisive economic development related to marble that invested the city beginning with the Unification of Italy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The protagonists of this urban and architectural reorganization were engineer Leandro Caselli, a pupil of architect Alessandro Antonelli and chief engineer of the municipality at that time, and the families of entrepreneurs active in the marble industry, including, precisely, the Binellis, who wanted to assert their importance in the city&#8217;s social and economic fabric also through their residential choices.<\/span><br \/>\n<span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Binelli counts were at that time among the most important families regarding the stone industry having built the first multiblade looms for sawing marble: an innovation that, as can be guessed, made it possible to definitely speed up work, and having been instrumental in the development of the newly born marina of Lavenza (now Marina di Carrara) where they had contributed to the idea of the English entrepreneur naturalized Italian Guglielmo Walton, fabricating one of the three loading docks used to stow marble blocks and slabs in the vessels that transported them around the world. They were among the protagonists of the period of great prosperity that invested Carrara at that moment in history.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Construction of the palace began in 1888, and it was built on a symmetrical plan and in the neoclassical style, an aesthetic approach that related Palazzo Binelli to the many buildings Caselli would design in Carrara during that period, completely redesigning it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The palace has three floors, served by a majestic central staircase with a load-bearing structure consisting of monolithic white marble steps perfectly fitted together, as in Caselli&#8217;s style.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The interior is sumptuously finished, with both marble and wood floors and frescoed ceilings, and the wide hallway connects the main entrance on Verdi Street with a rear opening that overlooks a lovely garden.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Over the years the center of the Binelli family&#8217;s business shifted more toward the harbor than to the mountain, and thus its representative function for which the palace had been built waned and was gradually abandoned, until it was sold in 1921 to the Bank of Italy, which, in its general plan to establish its own garrisons in the country&#8217;s major economic areas, turned the house into its own branch.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1966 the headquarters of the Bank of Italy moved to Massa, and Palazzo Binelli housed a detachment of the Academy of Fine Arts (established in 1769 by Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina with its headquarters in the family palace) first and then of the art high school.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 1994, after a period of abandonment and neglect, the palace was purchased by the Cassa di Risparmio di Carrara, and then passed, since 2006, into the hands of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio, which then undertook a valuable restoration bringing back to its original splendor the marble decorations, stuccoes and frescoes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Today Palazzo Binelli houses, in addition to the operational offices of the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation, conference spaces and exhibition halls where temporary exhibitions of local and international artists are continuously organized.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Noteworthy is the restoration of the palace garden, whose initial architecture has been overhauled and transformed into a marble amphitheater available both for events organized by the Foundation and for the community to host public cultural moments and weddings.    <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245417&quot;:false}\"> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Palazzo Binelli is one of the historic palaces of nineteenth-century Carrara;
